We are delighted to welcome two new staff to Cornwall VSF in the last couple of weeks: Sarah Phillips and Ellen Rudge. Here they explain what they will be doing, and a little about who they are – and of course their contact details.
Sarah Phillips – Engagement Officer – Public Health
Sarah Phillips is a Public Health Practitioner who has joined the VSF. Previously Sarah was part of the Public Health Team at Cornwall Council, where, in the past 10 months she has been supporting organisations and communities in prevention and containment of COVID-19, in particular working with vulnerable populations.
Prior to Sarah returning to Cornwall and joining the Public Health team, she had worked in various counties in voluntary sector organisations, around prevention and health promotion. Sarah has worked with all age groups and her public health passions include nutrition and mental health/wellbeing, but more importantly, helping others to understand complexities of behaviour change and impact of all elements of the lived environment can have on our health and wellbeing. (Lived environment includes pollution, climate, employment, housing, and more, if you find yourself in a conversation with her!)
Sarah had shared that throughout the pandemic she has been inspired by the voluntary sector’s response to our communities and is looking forward to further supporting the sector, not only with its immediate COVID-19 response, but also to help build long term sector collaboration, ensuring positive health and wellbeing to the residents of Cornwall. Sarah lives in the East of the county and enjoys maximising the great outdoors, whether moor walking or tending to the veg patch!

Ellen Rudge – VCSE Communications Officer – Public Health
Ellen is relatively new to Cornwall having moved here from the Midlands in pursuit of a more meaningful life by the sea. She worked at the University of Leicester and Leicester Students’ Union respectively for almost a decade and is looking forward to bringing the expertise she has gained in communications and marketing to help improve the reach and engagement with the Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) sector in Cornwall.
Her previous remit as Marketing and Communications Manager at Leicester Students’ Union was to develop the organisation’s marketing and communications strategy in order to enhance the Union’s brand and reputation to its members, which saw her successfully complete a rebranding exercise and website delivery project simultaneously.
During her time working in the News Centre at the University of Leicester, she played a key role in a variety of successful media campaigns including the discovery of King Richard III under a car park in Leicester. She also led on the production of multimedia news content and the introduction of an internal video news magazine for the University community.
Aside from working with Sarah to support the sector with COVID response and recovery, other key projects Ellen will be leading on include launching a charity search tool function for members and stakeholders to utilise, working with the incoming Communications, Marketing and PR Officer on rebranding Cornwall VSF to meet its members’ needs and improving its communications, marketing and PR output and website function.
