A DEFRA grant from Cornwall Council has enabled Treverbyn Community Trust to purchase a new van to provide more local communities with a Community Larder. The van starts its first round on the Thursday 21 January to benefit the villages of Roche, St Dennis, St Columb Major, Indian Queens and Fraddon.

Community Larders help to reduce waste food by collecting surplus food from supermarkets and giving it to anyone who wants to come and help themselves. This allows everyone do something positive to reduce our impact on the environment and helps save money at the same time.

Community Larders also provide additional food bags to people who are struggling financially, or facing a crisis in their lives. These can be requested by contacting Treverbyn Community Trust.

Since the first lockdown in 2020, the charity has been operating a Community Larder at Treverbyn Community Hall, and along with a number of partner organisations, has helped to deliver pop-up Community Larders in Penwithick, St Austell, Mevagissey, Minorca Lane – Bugle, Roche and St Dennis. This has only been possible thanks to the amazing support of dozens of volunteers who have helped make the project happen.

Now with the new van, Treverbyn Community Trust can expand the Community Larder network and reach more communities. Gary King, Mobile Community Larder Lead explains “We are starting our first round on Thursday the 21st to benefit some of the clay villages. Once this Thursday round is bedded in, we will look to develop others to benefit communities like Whitemoor, Nanpean, St Stephens and Trewoon.”

Gary continues “We are interested in hearing from anyone living in these areas that could help either by picking up surplus from nearby supermarkets, or by helping to do local deliveries to people who can’t get out to the community larder.”

A timetable for the mobile community larder can be found above, and on the website of Treverbyn Community Hall, along with a schedule of the pop-up Community Larders run by other partner organisations.
