We have heard of the King’s Fund’s free leadership development opportunity for voluntary and community sector (VCS) organisations working in health and wellbeing.
They use a broad definition of health and wellbeing. Previous participants have come from a wide range of organisations including charities that work with particular physical and mental health conditions, and organisations that support carers, refugees, and those affected by domestic violence or sexual exploitation.
The programme aims to bring together a diverse mix of participants including those from smaller organisations, individuals from minority groups and people from throughout the UK. Applications are especially welcomed from for consultants and partners from Black and minority ethnic communities, as people from these groups been under-represented on previous courses.

The biggest distinction about the Cascading Leadership programme is that you are mentored by a peer from your own sector, who’s got that lived experience of running an organisation.

Cascading Leadership provides an invaluable free opportunity for leaders working in health and wellbeing organisations in the voluntary and community sector (VCS) in the UK to develop their leadership skills and receive practical support.
It is built on a peer-to-peer model where an experienced VCS leader (a consultant) supports another VCS leader who is seeking support (a partner). They meet at least five times over a period of nine months where the partner has an opportunity to work through organisational issues and receive support. The consultant also benefits from being stretched to develop their own leadership and skills, while being supported and supervised by senior staff at The King’s Fund. Both roles offer a learning and development opportunity.
An independent evaluation of the Cascading Leadership programme has shown that participants build confidence, develop new skills, increase strategic thinking, expand their networks and help their organisations tackle major issues.
There is no charge for the programme, which is valued at £5,800 for each pair.

We spent time exploring the issues that were going on for me as a Chief Executive within my organisation, but also within the sector and it was great to have the time to really think about those issues, to really dig a bit deeper, reflect on what was happening.
It has really helped me with some of the problems I’ve been having in my organisation and my own practice, and it gives me another unique perspective to look at some of the issues we’re facing.
