Cornwall is one of the country’s best-placed areas to take advantage of Big Society initiatives, according to a new report by Richard Sutcliffe and Richard Holt for Consulting Inplace.

The report takes a statistical approach, looking at which local authority areas in England currently have the highest levels of volunteering and involvement in local decision making. Cornwall ranks 15th for volunteering and 13th for involvement out of a total of 324 local authorities.

The research also looks at places (dubbed ‘outriders’) where volunteering and involvement are higher than expected, given the area’s socio-economic make-up.  Cornwall again performs well here.

The researchers have taken much of their information on official government statistical sources. Click here for an executive summary and full copy of these reports.
