Cornwall Mobility are launching a new prototype beach wheelchair, in conjunction with Falmouth University, which is being tested on Cornish beaches this summer, before it goes to manufacture.
Beach wheelchairs are designed with inflatable tyres, giving the user a smooth ride over sand and pebbles. They are idea for wheelchair users, or others with mobility challenges, for whom sand, loose stones, or the distance from the carpark, make visiting beaches tricky.
The new chair is available to hire, free of charge, at the following locations:
Fistral beach, Newquay
Perranporth Gardens Charities, Perranporth beach
Riviere Sands Holiday Park, Hayle
St Michael’s Mount, Marazion, and
Seaton Beach Cafe, Seaton beach, Looe
People who have used the new chairs are invited to complete a survey on their experiences, to help Cornwall Mobility continue to make improvements.
Cornwall Mobility are looking for new venues to host their Beach Wheelchairs, and invite expressions of interest from beach side business, or beach owners locally. This is free of charge to the host, and anyone who is interested should contact Cornwall Mobility for more information.
Other beach wheelchairs are available to hire on beaches around Cornwall:
