Press release from Newquay Town Council

Newquay’s Town Team is seeking input on ways to transform Newquay’s Town Centre.

Local organisations and businesses have formed a Town Team for Newquay in order to apply for funding from Cornwall Council’s Town Centre Revitalisation Fund (TCRF), which aims to help town centres explore ways that they can become more vibrant.

A Town Team involves bringing together a team of local people to create a Town Regeneration Plan and identifying a small number of strategic projects that will bring economic prosperity to the Town.

Mayor of Newquay Louis Gardner has been elected as Chair of the Newquay Town Team, and Cllr Zoe Dixon as Vice Chair. Other members include various Town Councillors, representatives from Newquay BID, Visit Newquay, Cornwall Council, the Chairman of the Central Residents Association, local business owners and residents.

The Team will be focusing their efforts on the Town Centre, defined in the Newquay Neighbourhood Plan as the area from Rocklands on Cliff Road to The Red Lion on Fore Street.

During the most recent meeting on Monday 11 January 2021, the Town Team’s primary focus was to devise strategies for gathering and sharing information with members of the Team, local businesses, organisations, and residents, and to ensure the Team are able to listen to everyone’s ideas and points of view.

Over the coming months the Town Team will be asking people to identify Newquay Town Centre’s strengths and weaknesses, what changes need to be made, what physical improvements are required and what barriers the Team must overcome.

Chairman of the Town Team and Mayor of Newquay, Louis Gardner, commented: “The response for membership to the Town Team was fantastic with all sectors of business and local residents eager to play a part in the deciding on the future of our town centre. The Town Team will sit as its own organisation, independent of Newquay BID or the Town Council with clear aims and objectives and with the revitalisation of our town at the heart of everything it does.

“Our first goal is to secure seed funding of £150,000 from Cornwall Council in order to develop our plans and bid for much larger amounts which can make a real difference to our town. We will need input and feedback from as many people in Newquay as possible throughout the process. It is only by residents, businesses, the voluntary sector and councillors working together that we can develop a plan which is truly worthy of Newquay.

“As the first Chair of the Team, I’m delighted that we have got off to such a flying start with ideas and input and I hope we can maintain this momentum to secure the funding and investment which Newquay so badly needs.”
