Safer Summer Scheme feedback – Police & Crime Commissioner

The Police and Crime Commissioner’s Safer Summer Scheme funded extra summer resources to help prevent anti-social behaviour, support communities and provide COVID-19 guidance and reassurance as tourists and residents returned to our town centres and beaches over the busy summer months. In Cornwall, 7 areas benefited from the scheme – Bude, Newquay Fistral Beach and  Newquay Central, Perranporth/Perran Sands, Penzance, St Ives and Truro.

One of the key elements of the Scheme was the deployment of street/beach marshals to patrol ‘hotspot’ areas and the OPCC is now seeking public feedback on the marshals through a short poll on surveymonkey.

The survey will close at midnight on Tuesday 13th October 2020 and the results will form part of the evaluation of the scheme. Please share, to get a good number of responses.

Raising accessibility standards for new homes – Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government

This consultation considers how to raise accessibility standards, recognising the importance of suitable homes for older and disabled people.

In particular, it considers how the existing optional accessible and adaptable standard for homes and the wheelchair user standard are used and whether government should mandate a higher standard or reconsider the way the existing optional standards are used.

This consultation closes on 1 December 2020.

Review of The Highway Code to improve road safety for cyclists, pedestrians and horse riders – Department for Transport

This consultation is seeking views on proposed changes to The Highway Code to improve safety for vulnerable road users, particularly the groups of:

  • cyclists
  • pedestrians
  • horse riders

The main alterations to the code being proposed are:

  • introducing a hierarchy of road users which ensures that those road users who can do the greatest harm have the greatest responsibility to reduce the danger or threat they may pose to others
  • clarifying existing rules on pedestrian priority on pavements, to advise that drivers and riders should give way to pedestrians crossing or waiting to cross the road,
  • providing guidance on cyclist priority at junctions to advise drivers to give priority to cyclists at junctions when travelling straight ahead
  • establishing guidance on safe passing distances and speeds when overtaking cyclists and horse riders

This consultation closes on 27 October 2020.
