The Government is launching a consultation on changes to statutory sick pay.

At present, employees must earn at least equivalent to 14 hours on minimum wage to qualify for statutory sick pay (£118 per week), but one of the points of the consultation is looking at extending eligibility below this threshold.

Other points under consideration include

  • more support for those returning to work after sick leave
  • inclusion of ‘gig economy’ workers on freelance or short term contracts

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said: “We need to remove the barriers that stop people with disabilities or health conditions from reaching their full potential – these steps will help us achieve that.”

You can find out more in a BBC article about it, see the details of the proposals on the Gov.uk website, and take part in the survey on the DWP website.
