From April 2020, hospital trusts in England will be expected to begin offering free parking to certain categories of patients and visitors, in line with the government’s manifesto pledge.

Those who will benefit from the scheme include:

  • Blue badge holders
  • Frequent outpatients who have to attend regular appointments to manage long-term condition
  • Parents of sick children staying overnight (within specific time frames)
  • Staff working night shifts

The current guidelines for parking charges , which recommend reduced fees or charging caps for those in greatest need, will be updated.

The current parking regulations for the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust can be found here.  It is a lengthy document, covering mainly staff parking, as well as patient and visitor parking, and indicates that there are no blue badge concessions, although there are plentiful disabled parking spaces.  Concessionary parking tickets for long term patients and visitors only can be purchased at reduced rates.
