Here’s a message from Jan Hibbert, manager of Enable in Cornwall Ltd, with the sad news of their closure at the end of April 2017:
‘It is with deep regret that I must inform you of the impending closure of Enable in Cornwall Ltd.
‘Enable has been supporting some of the most vulnerable adults in the County for almost 21 years.
‘We were established by Cornwall Council Adult Social Care to provide support and advice; to empower adults with disabilities towards a more positive future. We have been doing this with great success using a small team of staff and some fantastic volunteers.
‘Grant funding and fundraising, together with corporate sponsorship have kept Enable afloat in the short term, however this is not sustainable.
‘Following the failure of a payment by results contract to bring sufficient referrals and the late commencement of ESF / Big Lottery funded Building Better Opportunities projects, Enable have traded on reserves to the point where the Board of Trustees took the painful decision to close the charity on 30th April 2017.
‘Since our Council funding ceased in 2014, we have helped over 400 people on the tiniest of budgets. Our outcomes evidence this work and clearly demonstrate our value. We have prevented further stress to health and social care services through our interventions and by providing outreach intensive support to those who cannot; due to health and disability problems, access mainstream services. Although we are signposting where we can, we are gravely concerned about where these clients will get support in the future.
‘We are giving the Cornwall Council Access telephone number (0300 1234 131) to existing clients and future enquiries.’
